Independent of Scott Joplin, Arthur Marshall (pictured) wrote a small collection of pieces every bit as graceful and dignified as those by other Classic Ragtime pioneers. Marshall’s aptitude for writing warm sonorities and pleasing melodies is well-displayed in his first published solo composition Kinklets (1906). It is through-composed (ABCD form), yet within it there is structural continuity: the last four measures of the C and D sections are similar, as are the first and ninth measures of the D section and the bridge (ms. 39-42). Max Morath’s sensitive, understated recording of Kinklets on The World of Scott Joplin Vol. 1 is recommended for listening. The score for Kinklets can be freely downloaded at imslp.org.
