The long-venerable practice of “ragging the classics” is at play in Bob Milne’s Christmas-themed CD Silent Night, Ragged Night. The disc contains fifteen popular Christmas songs played in Milne’s distinctive piano style, as well as three lovely carols composed by Milne himself. It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, reimagined as The Midnight Stomp, is my favorite track on the album.
Not every track is syncopated, boisterous Ragtime or Boogie Woogie; several of the selections—including Away in a Manger and Milne’s Who Will Come—are gentle and melodic. People who appreciate the artistry of Bob Milne will enjoy playing Silent Night, Ragged Night during the holidays. The disc can be ordered for $19.95 from Bob Milne at 3549 Stanley Rd., Lapeer, MI 48446.
