Broadway Rag (1922)

Broadway Rag (1922) is James Scott’s final published composition. It is thickly-chorded in keeping with Scott’s style. However, the tonic chord resolutions in the B section are not according to the norm of other Scott rags: these chords come to rest in root form, versus the usual first inversion. The piece is highly kinetic; there is a rare cessation of sixteenth note activity in the thirteenth measure of the piece’s C section. The bridge to the C section features thundering sixteenth note octaves. A diminished seventh chord arpeggio in the A section is similar to that in Scott Joplin’s The Cascades. Christina Pepper, Guido Nielsen, Max Morath, and Scott Kirby have all made excellent recordings of Broadway Rag. Sheet music for Broadway Rag can be found at imslp.org.
