Marjorie T. Scooros, affectionately known as Washboard Marj, passed away on June 11, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on April 5, 1941, Marj was a beloved figure in the jazz community of Arizona, where she was well known as a washboard player always ready to answer the call. A versatile musician, she also played the dulcimer, guitar, piano, ukulele, and sang, but it was her presence on the washboard that truly set her apart. As a key member of Arizona’s Banjo Blasters, Marj’s infectious energy brought joy to audiences across the region. She often appeared at the Arizona Classic Jazz Festival as well as monthly events held by the Arizona Classic Jazz Society. Her customized washboards, adorned with various accoutrements, reflected her creativity and dedication to her craft.
