Sacramento High School tRio Sending two on to Berklee

The “tRio”, from Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, consists of three talented musicians; Jake Nalangan (piano), Maddy Hill (bass) and Joseph Bly (drums). The high school is home to The Sacramento Jazz Education Foundation Traditional Jazz Youth Band Festival.

tRio was one of six high school groups in the nation to perform at the Monterey Next Gen Jazz Festival and was deemed “Best High School Jazz Combo in the Nation” by Downbeat Magazine. All three musicians have received solo awards and honors independently through the Sacramento State Jazz Festival (best high school pianist, bassist, and drummer).

Great Jazz!

All are also members of the AM jazz ensemble at Rio Americano and have experience working with other groups. Joseph and Jake recently traveled to Savannah, Georgia to participate in the Swing Central Festival. Maddy also plays in the popular pop-punk band Free Candy!, which recently toured Northern California and the Bay Area.

The members of the band individually have worked with esteemed musicians Wycliffe Gordon, Jason Marsalis, Sullivan Fortner, Craig Faniani, Reggie Graham and others. The “tRio” is under the direction of Maxwell Kiesner and Joshua Murray.

We haven’t heard the last of these young musicians, Jake and Maddy have both recently received scholarships to Berklee College of Music in Boston.
