New Photo of Bix Beiderbecke Discovered

According to Bix scholar Albert Haim, Great American Songbook maven Michael Feinstein has unearthed a previously unknown photo of Bix Beiderbecke. The photo, which was in a scrapbook belonging to Wolverines pianist and leader Dick Voynow, shows Bix flanked by two other men in golf togs. The other subjects in the photo have been tentatively identified as Wolverines trombonist Al Gande to the viewer’s left, and reedman Johnny Hartwell to the viewer’s right.

Michael Feinstein informed bandleader Vince Giordano of his find, and that the scrapbook also included the known photo of the Wolverines in the Gennett train station. On August 7, Giordano let Haim know that the Bix photos had been donated to the Great American Songbook Foundation in the care of GASF Archivist Lisa Lobdell.

Great Jazz!

Lisa Lobdell scanned the photos, including the hitherto unknown image, and sent the scans to Albert Haim who shared them with the online public on August 20.
