Hardly known outside of a small Jazz coterie, this small band contrived to create an ensemble effect much like the Fletcher Henderson outfit. Charlie Johnson played at Small’s Paradise Club in Harlem (229 1/2 7th Avenue at 135th Street) on and off from approximately the mid-twenties to mid-thirties.

The Boy In The Boat shows some beautifully-controlled muted work by Sidney de Paris; Walk That Thing gives a representative trombone solo from Jimmy Harrison. Ben Whittet (clarinet) and George Washington produce some delightfully lazy solo work on Hot Bones and Rice, whilst Sidney de Paris creates an Ellingtonian Cootie Williams growl solo which might be mistaken for the great trumpet man.

Charlie Johnson Paradise Orchestra?

Throughout there is a Clarence Williams overall sound which is probably due in part to the presence of that fine tuba player Cyrus St. Clair in the first two titles, and Billy Taylor in the second. This might be cited as some of the best recorded Harlem Jazz of the late twenties.

Redhotjazz.com was a pioneering website during the "Information wants to be Free" era of the 1990s. In that spirit we are recovering the lost data from the now defunct site and sharing it with you.
Most of the music in the archive is in the form of MP3s hosted on Archive.org or the French servers of Jazz-on-line.com where this music is all in the public domain.
Files unavailable from those sources we host ourselves. They were made from original 78 RPM records in the hands of private collectors in the 1990s who contributed to the original redhotjazz.com. They were hosted as .ra files originally and we have converted them into the more modern MP3 format. They are of inferior quality to what is available commercially and are intended for reference purposes only. In some cases a Real Audio (.ra) file from Archive.org will download. Don't be scared! Those files will play in many music programs, but not Windows Media Player.

The site supplying most of the MP3 files to the Red Hot Jazz Archive pages on Syncopatedtimes.com is down and many links no longer work. You may find the original Redhotjazz.com and download all of the original RealMedia .ra music files on the WayBackMachine at Archive.org.
