Michael Chisholm’s Brazos (2014) is my favorite piece from the collection of rags commissioned by Danny Matson. Its abundance of earthy dominant seventh chords and melodies tracing the tones of those chords are clues to the influence of Jack Rummel and Brun Campbell. The 8 measure G7 C7 F7 B-flat chord progression that is the foundation of the opening section of Brazos is the same as that of the opening section of Ginger Snap Rag, yet in my opinion better-executed.
Chisholm consciously pays homage to Texas Folk Ragtime by casting the B and C sections of Brazos in irregular lengths (24 and 14 measures respectively). The CD and sheet music folio containing Brazos (Ragtime Wizardry Vol. 2, BSW-2247, pictured above) can be purchased at rivermontrecords.com.
