Pismo Beach Jazz Jubilee Returning MLK Weekend: Full Preview

The Jazz Jubilee Team is working round the clock (literally) to bring you the best possible festival early next year, January 12th-15th 2023.

All of the bands have been hired including Cornet Chop Suey, the Midiri Brothers Septet, Professor Cunningham and his Old School, Gator Nation, Black Market Trust, St. Gabriels Celestial Jazz Band, the Yve Evans Trio, Dawn Lambeth and Friends, the High Street Party Band, Carl Sonny Leyland and Friends, the Creole Syncopators and Tom Rigney and Flambeau. We are also bringing in local favorites Kathryn Loomis & Co, the Big Sirs of Swing and the Jump Jax to introduce to a wider audience.
For those who like big swing bands, we will be featuring two; Central City Swing and the Royal Garden Swing Orchestra.

Our special guests this year are Paul Ingle, Danny Coots, Washboard Steve, Kris Tokarski, Riley Baker, Jeff Barnhart, Jack O’Roonie and Igor Glenn.

Some of our programming this year will tie into the Martin Luther King holiday. Jeff and Anne Barnhart, AKA Ivory&Gold ® will present a special program on the early roots of jazz and ragtime that you will not want to miss.

We will have special musical guests during each of our jam sessions ably led by C.J. Sams.

We will have dance lessons Friday morning at the Veteran’s Hall. Dancing on wooden dance floors at all our venues will be the rule of the day.

A highly anticipated new band for our festival will be the Holland/Coots Swingin’ West band from Nashville, Tennessee. Our Thursday night show will also be new, featuring the widely acclaimed trio, Groovus (Holland, Coots and Steven Pikal) with special guest Adrian Cunningham. You do not want to miss the only performance of this musical assemblage at our festival.

Throughout the festival, we will offer unique opportunities to visit some other locations around town, where Jubilee will host our bands to appear at local restaurants and bars. This is our way of paying back the Community for the generous local grants we have received in support of our Festival. Details will be available in the festival program. Weather permitting, we also hope to have a few second line parades featuring the St. Gabriel’s Celestial Brass Band.

In addition to some new bands, we will also be trying out some new venues in our neighboring city, Grover Beach. The Grover Beach Community Center features wood floors throughout the facility, a generous wood floor stage, kitchen, outdoor area, on-site and street parking and a seating capacity of up to 400 people. The Ramona Park facility, also very nice, is surrounded by a park and will seat up to 120 people. There is a wooden dance floor built right into the main room. Both of these facilities are close to Pismo Beach and can be accessed via the surface streets. This means that neither the buses nor the driving attendees will need to get on the freeway to shuttle between the sites.

Other venues include the Seacrest Banquet Room, the Skyroom at the Edgewater and the Pismo Beach Veteran’s Memorial Building.

We will have buses again, using the same highly successful bus company from 2019, SLO Safe Ride. Parking is limited at most venues, so we encourage as many as possible to make use of the buses. We will identify additional parking areas close to some of our new venues.

We are using an external ticketing service to help us streamline our operations. This service also collects hotel and other metrics as part of the badge sale, eliminating the need to request this data at the festival. We will also incorporate the Hold Harmless agreement into this transaction. We strongly encourage everyone to use this ticketing system.

In exchange for this increased operational capability, we have had to slightly raise our badge pricing (no additional online ticketing fees will be assessed). Pricing for 3 days will be $125 if postmarked by November 22nd, $130 November 23rd through January 11th and $140 starting January 12th and at the door. VIP Seating 3-day badge will be $250, Band Patron (two 3-day badges and band sponsorship) will be $750, and Diamond Patron (four 3-Day badges and 2 bands) will be $1,500.  Thursday night tickets $30. Single day badges are available, $65 for Friday, $90 for Saturday and $35 for Sunday. Half price badges will be available on Friday and Saturday starting at 5:00 p.m. We will continue our tradition of steeply discounted $35 3-day badges for those aged 30 and under- a remarkable value. Children 12 and under are free accompanied by a paid adult. Early-Bird badges will be mailed in early December.  The rest will be at Will Call at the Pismo Beach Veteran’s Hall on Thursday, Jan. 12th, 2:00 -6:00 p.m. and beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13th.

As a service to our customers, we have left open the option of paying by check, which can be mailed to Basin Street Regulars, Attention Jubilee, P. O. Box 356, Pismo Beach, CA 93448. The check should be payable to BSR and specify what it is for, i.e., number of Jubilee badges, amount of Jubilee donation, etc.
In addition to our live in-person shows, we will also offer the opportunity to watch a Livestream or post-festival recording of some of the performances, TBD. The venue location will most likely be the Pismo Beach Veteran’s Hall. Please keep checking back at Pismojazz.com to see how to connect to the link. Please donate generously if you are watching the recording or Livestream as we still have to pay for the bands and the venues even if you can’t attend in person. The Livestreaming or recording for later viewing is partially underwritten by grants from the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors and other local sponsors. We will also be sending e-mails to our regular Jubilee distribution lists with the necessary information.

We have worked some good deals with local hotels and this information will be available upon publication of this article. Please go to http://pismojazz.com for details.

We are all very excited to be back in Pismo Beach and Grover Beach hosting the festival of a lifetime after several long, hard years. We think that many of you are anxious to rejoin us. Although things could change in the coming months and affect our plans, we will do our best to provide the entertainment and party atmosphere that has come to be associated with Jazz Jubilee by the Sea. We hope that we can all be together to make this happen.
