In my opinion, Vincent Matthew Johnson is the foremost composer of Classic Ragtime not named Scott Joplin. Moreover, I also believe that the assortment of Johnson’s pieces contained within Invincible Syncopations (BSW-2241, available at rivermontrecords.com) is one of the most formidable collections of a single composer’s “classic-style” Ragtime works. The above assertions carry a heavy burden of proof, the satisfaction of which I offer in the form of Elder Street Rag.
The first full measure alone (pictured) displays deft craftsmanship with its hand-versus-hand dialogue of sixteenth note phrases. This measure also serves to introduce a key motif—melodic movement by half step—that recurs throughout the piece (e.g. in ms. 13-15 of the A section, played by the right hand thumb). The C section, with its left hand block chords, is reminiscent of Scott Joplin’s Paragon Rag. Also like Joplin, Johnson finishes this and other rags with a strong, decisive closing section. Sheet music for the pieces contained within Invincible Syncopations can be purchased by sending $40 to Vincent M. Johnson, P.O. Box 1065, Monterey Park, CA 91754.
