Bassist/vocalist George French has died at age 80. He was part of the prominent New Orleans musical family. His father was Albert “Papa” French, longtime leader of the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band. George’s older brother Bob took over the band when their father died. After Bob’s passing George’s son Gerald took over the band and runs it today.
George French recorded with Tradition Hall Jazz Band, Germaine Bazzle, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Wendell Brunious, and the New Orleans C.A.C. Jazz Orchestra. He released albums as a leader in the 90s and 00s. As a bassist, he appeared on several hit Rhythm and Blues records of the 50s and 60s, and with the Wild Magnolias for their early recordings. Later in life, he leaned in on his vocal talent, leading groups at Economy Hall during New Orleans Jazz Fest
