Thanks to the enterprise of Victor Recording Company in 1927, when they took a roving recording microphone around the south and mid-west of America, we have authentic New Orleans jazz from Dumaines’ Jazzola Eight which gives us an idea of real New Orleans jazz long before the revival of interest in this music brought forth a spate of re-creations.

To-Wa-Bac-A-Wa” is Creole French for the very old melody known popularly as “Bucket Got A Hole In It”, and gives us some very attractive ensemble work. “Pretty Audrey” enables one to enjoy the traditional clarinet playing of Willie Joseph, the Oliver-like cornet of Dumaine himself, and a solo from composer Morris Rouse, who is given his head in a beautiful barrel-house solo in “Red Onion Drag” – very ably supported by the rhythm section. Dumaine had a mellow tone – well in the tradition of the best New Orleans cornetists vise his solo in “Franklin Street Blues“.
