Praise for “The Miller Effect”

To the Editor:

As a consequence of travel, I’m a month behind in my reading of the April edition of The Syncopated Times. Thus, I didn’t get to Sean Kennedy’s article about my uncle Glenn (“The Miller Effect”) until this morning, May 17.

Joplin

I often feel defensive when comments are made that suggest that Glenn and his musical approach somehow “didn’t do it right” because it didn’t swing enough or wasn’t “jazzy” enough. By placing those criticisms into a much larger cultural perspective, Mr. Kennedy encourages readers to fully appreciate the broader impact of Glenn’s music. I am so grateful!

I am especially thankful for the article’s emphasis on Glenn’s decision, at the height of his success, to disband the organization because he felt a strong need to provide support to the soldiers who made his success possible in the first place. Where in today’s world is there an example of greed subordinated to a sense of moral obligation?

Thank you, Sean Kennedy.
