Maria Muldaur’s tribute to singer Blue Lu Barker was nominated for a Grammy and we ran a long story about it. A few other 2019 Grammy nominations of interest to readers of The Syncopated Times include Cécile McLorin Salvant’s The Window vying for Best Jazz Vocal Album and pianist Jon Batiste’s version of “St. James Infirmary Blues” nominated for Best American Roots Performance.

Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album nominations are All About That Basie, The Count Basie Orchestra directed by Scotty Barnhart; American Dreamers: Voices of Hope, Music of Freedom by the John Daversa Big Band featuring DACA Artists; Presence, by Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band; All Can Work by the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble; and Barefoot Dances and Other Visions by Jim Mcneely & The Frankfurt Radio Big Band.
