The 1929 version of Louis Armstrong and his Savoy Ballroom Five was really the Luis Russell Orchestra with the addition of Eddie Condon and Lonnie Johnson. Armstrong would later front the Luis Russell Orchestra and it would become known as the Louis Armstrong Orchestra in 1934. The group was named after the Savoy Ballroom at South Parkway and East 47th Street in Chicago.
