Lucille Hegamin was the second person to make a Blues record after the initial success of Mamie Smith’s breakthrough recordings in 1920. Hegamin’s first record was “Jazz Me Blues” and “Everybody’s Blues” on the Arto label. The record was released under the name of Lucille Hegamin accompanied by Harris’s Blues And Jazz Seven; after that her backup band would go by the name of the Blue Flame Syncopaters.

Lucille Hegamin and her Blue Flame Syncopaters – 1921 – right to left George Barbour, unknown bass brass, Charlie Irvis, Harvey Boone, Lucille Hegamin, unknown violinist, Bill Hegamin, unknown saxophonist.

The band was led by her husband Bill Hegamin, and they toured the country with her. Lucille’s next record came out a few months after her first record and was “Arkansas Blues” and “I’ll Be Good But I’ll Be Lonesome“. “Arkansas Blues” was one of the most popular records of 1921. It was such a hit that Mamie Smith recorded a cover version of Hegamin’s hit that same year and the Mound City Blue Blowers would also have a hit with it in 1924. Hegamin continued to record and tour with the Blue Flame Syncopaters until 1922. Lucille and her husband divorced in 1923. She continued to be very popular throughout the rest of the 1920s.
