The 1928 version of this band featured the same personnel as Louis Armstrong and his Hot Seven records. Their recordings are generally considered to be among Louis Armstrong’s best. The song “A Weather Bird” is a duet with pianist Earl Hines and is one of the outstanding recordings of the 1920s.

The 1929 version of Louis Armstrong and his Savoy Ballroom Five was really the Luis Russell Orchestra with the addition of Eddie Condon and Lonnie JohnsonArmstrong would later front the Luis Russell Orchestra and it would become known as the Louis Armstrong Orchestra in 1934. The group was named after the Savoy Ballroom at South Parkway and East 47th Street in Chicago.
